Radio Results Network Introduces Student Takeover Program with Radio X

October 6, 2023

The Radio Results Network (RRN) in Marquette, MI hosted their first Takeover Tuesday on the evening of October 3rd as part of their new partnership program with Radio X (91.5 WUPX). DJ’s Alex and Ella, sophomores at Northern Michigan University, kicked off the inaugural broadcast on 100.3 The Point WUPT where they shared stories, thoughts and played trivia games between blocks of classic rock hits.

Radio Results Network is the largest radio broadcast network in the Upper Peninsula with 15 stations that reach across the central and western U.P. as well as into Northern Wisconsin. Radio X is Northern Michigan University’s student run radio station where any interested students can learn the ropes of broadcasting, no matter their major. Many students host their own shows at varying times throughout the day.

Over the summer RRN Programming Assistant Grace Harlow, the current Station Manager of Radio X Lauren Lahtinen and her predecessor Julia Emery worked together with RRN management to create an opportunity for students at Radio X to further their experience in the broadcasting industry. Every other Tuesday evening between 5 - 7 p.m. selected DJs are now able to bring their own flavor to the airwaves of Radio Results Network.

“The cool thing about the Radio Results Network student takeover is that students are going to have an actual chance to...connect with a wider audience. And it’s just kind of a more well-known radio station in town which I think is cool, so it will give students the opportunity to kind of broaden their perspective on what they get to experience in radio,” Lahtinen says. “Just the fact that they’ll get more of a commercial radio experience and be able to play some music and have fun with that but also get to learn some more about community events and learn different systems of radio, I think they’re super excited to do that.”

Grace Harlow shares Radio X’s excitement. “The takeovers not only give the students a great opportunity to learn new systems and skills they might not experience at their station, but it gives them a wider view into the radio world and I hope it will help excite and inspire the next generation of on air talent. Plus, we’re getting the chance to add more local voices to our airwaves, while learning what’s important to our listeners from the university’s student body firsthand.”

RRN General Manager, Jesse Huff added, “We are always looking for ways to connect with our community and the students on the campus of Northern Michigan University. This was a great opportunity to work side by side with them to experience local radio.”

There are three more Takeover Tuesdays planned for this semester on October 17th, October 31st and November 14th on 100.3 The Point WUPT. Plans are also in the works for other future takeover events on the other stations of the Radio Results Network.
