Statewide Tornado Drill w/EAS March 20

March 8, 2024

On Wednesday, March 20, 2024 at 1 p.m. Eastern, broadcasters should be prepared for a special EAS RMT promoting Severe Weather Awareness Week (March 17-23).  This is coordinated to air with local communities who have the option of sounding their tornado sirens at the same time.  The 1 p.m. test is promoted as the Statewide Tornado Drill.

Broadcasters should note that EAS alert with be coded as an RMT and will include some extra language regarding Severe Weather Awareness Week.

Severe weather can strike at any time.  It is important that everyone be prepared to act when alerts are issued.  The Voluntary Statewide Tornado Drill is an excellent opportunity for Michigan families, schools, and businesses to practice their emergency plans and enhance their readiness for a severe weather event.  Encourage your community to test their plan, know the alerts in their area, and be prepared!

The 2024 Severe Weather Awareness Week and Statewide Tornado Drill Media Tool Kit is now available.  Please use the tools provided in this newsletter to inform your viewers and listeners about the hazards of severe weather and to promote Severe Weather Awareness Week and the annual Voluntary Statewide Tornado Drill.  There is some excellent material for newsrooms, on-air personalities and social media.

If you have questions regarding the special RMT, contact Dan Kelley at the MAB:  dkelley@michmab.com.
