Radio's Best Friend and Michigan's very own Art Vuolo, Jr. shares news of the passing of Bob Kelly. Born Norman Plumer in Akron on May 15, 1941, Bob Kelly died on his 84th birthday after an impressive five decade career on Toledo radio, with a five year insert at WWJ in Detroit.
His infectious style of wit and humor was contagious and was a staple on the Glass City radio dial beginning in 1965. He began his Toledo run at WTOD-AM (1560), diverted to Detroit's WWJ-AM (950) before returning for a long run in Ohio's fourth largest city. Bob Kelly worked at WOHO-AM (1470), WCWA-AM (1230), WXKR-FM (94.5) and WRQN-FM (93.5) and retired in 2011. Married since 1981 to his wife Linda, he was partnered with Dennis Staples at WCWA and it was Bob and Becky later at WRQN.
Kelly quipped that he worked for every station in Toledo, but the Sunoco!"
A memorial service is scheduled for 6 pm on Saturday May 31st at the Newcomer Funeral Home 36655 King Rd Toledo, OH 43617 with visitation starting at 2 pm.
