Civic Media Officially Moves Into Michigan’s Upper Peninsula

During the Government shutdown, Michigan Civic Media Alliance closed on its its deal to buy WUPY-FM (Ontonagon), WMPL-AM/WKMJ-FM (Hancock) and WJMS-AM/WIMI-FM (Ironwood) from Jerry Hackman’s J&J Broadcasting. The deal also included the Hancock-licensed translator W297CD that simulcasts WMPL as well as the Ironwood-licensed translator W221EH that simulcasts WJMS.

In a related deal, Inside Radio reports that Civic Media also closed on a one dollar deal to buy a Park Falls, WI-licensed translator W272AY from Tea-Visz. The translator relays WIMI. Michigan Civic Media Alliance is two-thirds owned by Madison, Wisconsin-based Civic Media, with the balance held by Jason Franklin’s Michigan Independent Media Group.

The assignments were originally filed with the FCC in July and approved by the FCC on September 5.  The consummation notice was filed this past Wednesday (11/19) after the FCC resumed operations.
