WZZM-TV Chief Meteorologist George Lessens Announces Retirement

After more than 40 years of delivering accurate forecasts, Chief Meteorologist George Lessens of WZZM-TV (Grand Rapids) has decided to retire at the end of the year, leaving an indelible mark on West Michigan's weather scene.

Known for his signature mustache and bowtie, George Lessens is West Michigan’s longest-tenured meteorologist at any single station. He leaves behind a legacy of trust and accuracy that has endeared him to viewers throughout the region since he started on November 17, 1980.

Lessens, an American Meteorological Society (AMS) Certified Broadcast Meteorologist, a thirteen-time MAB Weathercast Award Winner, and a two-time EMMY® Award Winner, has recently been honored with a lifetime achievement award – the Charles L. Mitchell Award for Outstanding Service by a Forecaster.

“George Lessens has been a constant at our station and in our community for over 43 years,” said Dan Baylog, President and General Manager of WZZM. “Many people who watched him for snow day information as kids are now watching him with their own children! He has left a legacy in West Michigan of keeping our region safe and informed.”

Beyond his on-screen presence, Lessens has dedicated his career to service, participating in research, teaching meteorology at the college level, and mentoring aspiring meteorologists. His contributions extend to the community, where he has worked alongside NOAA as a Weather-Ready Nation Ambassador for over a decade.

Juliet Dragos, WZZM Anchor and Executive Producer commented, "We have been at the same station for decades. That doesn’t happen anymore in local TV."

As Lessens finishes his 44th year at the station, the station invites the community to join in various events and festivals throughout the spring, summer, and fall to connect and wish him well. Specific details will be shared by the station in the coming months. In a statement, the station said they express gratitude for his unwavering commitment to accurate forecasting, community service and the viewers of West Michigan.
