Bob Kevoian of the nationally syndicated Bob & Tom Show died last Friday (4/17) at the age of 75 in Indianapolis.
The news was announced by the show in a post on social media. ”It is with profound sadness that we announce the loss of Bob Kevoian, beloved co-founder and longtime host of The Bob & Tom Show, who passed away peacefully Friday afternoon at his home, surrounded by family and friends,” the statement shared. “Details regarding memorial services will be shared at a later time.”
The Bob & Tom Show, which is heard on many stations throughout Michigan has its roots in Northern Michigan. The two met in an upscale “watering hole” called The Bar Harbor in Harbor Springs, MI. They were already in radio, working at two different Petoskey stations, when media sales rep Lucy Nalley (now retired and living in Grand Haven), suggested putting them together on 100,000 watt WJML-FM. The rest of the story played out for the better part of four decades.
Tom has been the creative driving force of the nationally syndicated program, but Bob’s professional board work and contagious laugh made the pair and instant hit when they moved to Indianapolis in 1983 at WFBQ-FM.
With 100 affiliates nationwide, the program recently celebrated 43 years on the air! They’ve also won more NAB Marconi Awards than any other show. Kevoian retired from the show in 2015, but the name remains the Bob & Tom Show to this day. The show is well known for its cast members, many who have come and gone through the years, as well as playing a role in launching the careers of countless comics and that continues.
The show was also seen nationally for two years on cable network WGN America and can now be viewed on YouTube.
In June of 2023, Kevoian made a guest appearance on the Bob & Tom show to reveal he had been diagnosed with gastric cancer.
In an unprecedented act of kindness, and a “competition be damned,” attitude, Cumulus Media of Indianapolis posted a tribute to Bob’s passing on the RDS read-out on car radio dials tuned to any of their local FM stations: WFMS, WZPL, WNTR and WJJK.
Radio's best friend, Art Vuolo, Jr. produced this video, which offers lots of laughs and early memories of the Bob & Tom Show. Our thanks to Art for contributing to this article.
