WGVU’s David Oliver Retires After 34 Years

After 34 Years at WGVU Public Media (Grand Rapids), Director of Engineering David Oliver has announced his retirement, effective May 1, 2026.

Oliver honorably served 6 years in the U.S. Navy, earning the rank of Electronics Technician 1st Class. As a non-commissioned officer, he was responsible for a team of SatCom technicians and equipment supporting communications for the U.S. Fleet and NATO.  Upon completion of his Navy service, he joined Hughes Network Systems as VSAT Hub Engineer, supporting the Chrysler and GM dealer networks.

In 1992, Oliver joined WGVU as a Broadcast Maintenance Engineer.  In 1997 he assumed the role of the Engineering Supervisor. He was promoted to Director of Engineering in 2018 and most recently oversaw the relocation of WGVU to temporary facilities during their upcoming  2½ year building remodel.

Oliver was recipient of the MAB's Carl E. Lee Engineering Excellence Award in 2017.
