On August 20, MacDonald Broadcasting's WQHH-FM (Dewitt/Lansing) held its 17th Annual Backpack Giveaway, handing out 1,000 backpacks to the community.  Each backpack was filled with essential school supplies.

Event organizers emphasized the importance of the event for getting kids ready for the new school year.

“When you think about today’s economy its rough on people right, kids cant afford simple school supplies so we stuffed them with papers, pens, erasers, note pads, all of it. And maybe, it may look like a simple thing, but it goes a long way,” WQHH's Rick Party told WILX-TV.

Party said this type of community outreach resonates with a lot of the people who helped out, because many of them know what it’s like to be in need, and what it means to have that need filled.

The event sponsor was Michigan State Federal Credit Union.  Additional sponsors included Lansing Police Department, University of Michigan Sparrow Health, Kia of Lansing, Bridgewater Interiors, Lansing Community College, Playmakers, Twins Auto Sales, Baryames Tuxedo and Suit, Quality Dairy, Schuler Books, Zap Zone and Lansing School District.
