To kick off the Memorial Day weekend, Townsquare Media's WKFR-FM (Kalamazoo) held its 27th annual Roof Sit for children facing abuse in Southwest Michigan. From Thursday through Saturday, (5/22-24), the station's morning show (Dana and Jess) broadcast live from the roof of Helzberg Diamonds in nearby Portage.
Even in the chill of early spring, the community came together, raising an impressive $74,413. The original goal for this year's effort was $90,000 and the station continues to solicit donations in order to reach the goal as money raised will be matched dollar-for-dollar by a VOCA (Victims of Crime Act) grant. All funds raised will go to the local Community Healing Center to support treatment for children who have been sexually or physically abused, treatment and healing for their families, as well as intensive support for parents, infants, toddlers, and children who are facing significant challenges.
The event also included an online auction, a dinner and other activities.
