Your MAB is sad to pass along the news that former WZZM-TV (Grand Rapids) Master Control Room Supervisor Roger Ball passed away September 7 at age 84.

Ball began his career at WZZM-TV in 1962, joining the station just two weeks after it launched from the historic Pantlind Hotel in downtown Grand Rapids, working initially as a projectionist. As the station grew, Ball was promoted to control room operator in 1969, master control room engineer in 1977, and finally master control room supervisor in 2000. In a testament to his dedication, he also volunteered on the station’s crisis response team and building safety committee.

In 2001, Ball was recognized for his four decades of contribution to local broadcasting with induction into the Michigan Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame, a distinction honoring his professionalism, character, and unwavering commitment to the industry.

According to his obituary, he had a deep passion for boating, aviation and real estate. He once held a pilot’s license and loved the freedom of flying—just one of the many ways he embraced life with curiosity and energy. He also served with the Walker Police Department’s Senior Volunteer Unit for seven years, where he took on patrol duties and provided support for court operations.

Ball adored his family and was known for his great sense of humor, which he shared generously with everyone around him. He is survived by his wife, Kathy Ball; his three children, Brandie Perry, Tiffani Wietfeldt, and Russ (Laura) Ball; six cherished grandchildren, Chris (Amanda) Wietfeldt, Robert (Maci) Perry, Brandon (Tessa) Perry, Danica Wietfeldt, Sophia Ball, and Dre Hernandez-Knox, and five great-grandchildren: Mason Wietfeldt, Brinley Wietfeldt, Juniper Wietfeldt, Iris Wietfeldt, and Addy Perry.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Donna Ball; his parents, Dewey and Ruth Ball; brothers, Robert and Red Ball; and his sister, Geraldine Ball.
