Detroit TV & Radio Legend Bob Hynes Dies at 93

Longtime Detroit TV and radio personality Bob Hynes died last Friday (10/17) in California, following a brief illness, according to a family spokesperson. The Saginaw native hosted his own morning show on WXYZ-TV for five years beginning in 1966. On that program he interviewed many celebrities of the era, including Gordie Howe, Robert Goulet, Florence Henderson, Lucille Ball, Adam West, Cybill Shephard, Bob Newhart and others.
In the 1970s and 1980s, he hosted an afternoon radio talk show on WJR-AM and filled in on 'Bill Kennedy at the Movies' on WKBD-TV.
In 1972, Hynes teamed up with producer Dan Kibee and actor Dom DeLuise to film the television show “Road Company,” The pilot episode featured the city of Houston and included musical guests Kenny Rogers and Sheila MacRae as well as Apollo 12 astronaut Rick Gordon.
At one point in his career, he also served as a meteorologist before co-founding WYUR-AM (Detroit) in 1997. WYUR is known today at WDTW-AM.
After retirement, Hynes served on the board of the Yankee Air Museum (Michigan Flight Museum) and was active in the Grosse Pointe Men's Club.
Survivors include his sons, Michael (Rosalind) Hynes of Asheville, N.C. and Patrick (Andrea) Hynes of Manhattan Beach, Calif.; and four grandchildren, Declan Hynes, Chloe Hynes, Rose Hynes and Grace Hynes; as well as the seven children, 19 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren of Mary Brieden.
