Born December 28, 1949, in Bad Axe, Michigan, he attended Delta College and Michigan State University, studying journalism and broadcasting.  Jylha began his career in radio, working at stations WBCM, WXOX, WGER and WSGW.  At WXOX, he served as air personality, news reporter and eventually news director.  He joined WSGW in 1982, doing news and on-air work.

In 1986, he joined WNEM-TV as a reporter and later served as a weekend anchor before moving into weather in 1992.  Jylha remained a familiar presence on the station through 2007 and continued working part-time in weather and reporting until 2014, completing 28 years with the station.

Beyond broadcasting, Jylha was a longtime member of the Rotary Club of Bay City, where he served as president and historian. He had a deep interest in local history, photography, storytelling, and sharing the history of the region through lectures and community involvement.
