Bob Lawrence has been named Market Manager for MacDonald Broadcasting’s Saginaw cluster. Last week, he left the same role at Seven Mountains Media’s Parkersburg, WV group. At MacDonald, Lawrence will oversee country WKCQ-FM. WMJO-FM, WSAG-FM and WSAM-AM.  He begins his new position of June 2.

Regional RTDNA Murrow Award Winners Announced

The Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) has announced the recipients of the 2025 Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards.  8 Michigan broadcasters won a total of 12 awards in Region 7, which is shared with Illinois, Indiana and Ohio.  Award recipients demonstrate the spirit of excellence that Murrow set as a standard for the profession of electronic journalism.

Michigan Public receives AAJA Journalism Excellence Awards

Michigan Public has been honored by the AAJA (Asian American Journalists Association) with multiple Journalism Excellence Awards.  Zena Issa, Michigan Public’s Criminal Justice reporter won the AAJA 2025 Student Excellence in Audio Storytelling Award for her Stateside podcast segment “What the Vote?: Gen Z and the Uncommitted Movement.”

Former WOOD Radio Anchor/Reporter John Smith Passes at 64

Your MAB is sad to pass along word that former WOOD Radio (Grand Rapids) news anchor/reporter John Christopher “Smitty” Smith passed away May 11 at age 64, just three days before his 65th birthday. Smith started his broadcasting career while a student at Michigan State University at WILS-AM (Lansing).

Bob Kelly – 50 Years in Toledo Radio Gone at 84

Radio’s Best Friend and Michigan’s very own Art Vuolo, Jr. shares news of the passing of Bob Kelly.  Born Norman Plumer in Akron on May 15, 1941, Bob Kelly died on his 84th birthday after an impressive five decade career on Toledo radio, with a five year insert at WWJ in Detroit.

The award ceremonies will be held with a banquet on June 14 at The Fillmore Detroit. Broadcast stations and non-broadcast production entities throughout the state have received multiple nominations.
