Longtime WOOD-TV Weatherman Buck Matthews Dies at 97

Buck Matthews, who for years was a household name in West Michigan as a WOOD TV (Grand Rapids) weatherman and show host passed away this past Monday (3/30). He was 97.Matthews joined WOOD-TV in 1961 and remained on air for more than two decades.

WABX Air Ace Reunion in the Motor City

Fifty-year Detroit Radio legend Doug Podell who, in February, retired while at iHeart’s WLLZ-FM, decided to incorporate a reunion of some of the well-remembered personalities who were a part of Detroit’s first “underground” progressive rock and roll FM station, 99.5 WABX (now country WYCD).

Mid-West Family Broadcasting announced this week that it is bringing back “98.3 The Coast” branding on its WCXT-FM (Hartford/Benton Harbor).  For several years now the frequency was host to “Live 98.3” and featuring an alternative rock format.

Michigan Public “The Dish” Hosts to receive National Gracie Awards

Two Michigan Public staff members have been selected to receive National Gracie Awards.  Mercedes Mejia, host of the station’s “The Dish” culinary podcast, won a National Gracie Award for best Interview Feature. Additionally, Kate Wells won for her Public Health coverage as best Reporter/Correspondent.

WCSX’s Big Jim O’Brien and Rock & Brews Salute to Veterans

As part of the opening festivities, Rock & Brews presented a $3,000 donation to Vets Returning Home, a local organization dedicated to supporting veterans in need. The donation was made alongside Big Jim O’Brien of 94.7 WCSX (who coordinated the fundraiser) and Sandy Bower of Vets Returning Home, highlighting a shared mission to give back to the veteran community.

After more than four decades in broadcasting, Zoe Burdine-Fly, Senior Vice President for Connoisseur Media has announced her retirement.  Burdine-Fly, a past MAB Chair, joined then-Alpha Media in late 2021, overseeing  the operations, talent management and the strategic growth of 13 Alpha Media markets, including Amarillo, Bakersfield, Lincoln and Topeka.

WKAR Public Media (East Lansing) has announced the debut of a new series focused on Mid-Michigan talent.  Streetlight Sessions is a show dedicated to Mid-Michigan’s music scene, directed and hosted by WKAR’s Al Martin.  Martin is best known for his sports reporting for WKAR.

After 50 years in radio and 21 with Liggett/RadioFirst in Port Huron, WSAQ-FM Program Director/Midday Talent Chuck Santoni is hanging up the headphones after today (3/27). Santoni joined WSAQ in February, 2005 following a long run on Detroit rock radio.
