Severe weather this past Sunday (3/30) across Michigan took dozens of broadcasters throughout the state, bringing down power lines and affecting broadcasters without backup power. In two instances, ice build up brought down two broadcast towers in the northern part of the lower peninsula.
Allen Media’s WJRT-TV (Flint) has announced the promotion of Ryan Cole to Assistant News Director of the station. A long-time broadcaster in the Lenawee County community retired March 31. Steve Barkway, with over 52 years in broadcasting under his belt, wore many hats at the Lenawee Broadcasting Company and WLEN-FM. He was the station’s morning show host, sports director, sports producer, salesman and sales manager.

Michigan Public (Ann Arbor) has been notified that April Baer, host of the station’s daily Stateside show, has been selected to receive a National Gracie Award as best local Public Media host (Radio – Non-Commercial Local). Established in 1975, the Gracie Awards are celebrating their 50th year of honoring excellence of women in media and are presented by The Alliance of Women in Media.

Veteran broadcaster and journalist Jon King has been named editor-in-chief of Michigan Advance. King, previously senior reporter at the news operation, has been a journalist for more than 35 years and has served as past president of the Michigan Associated Press Media Editors Association.
After 43 years of service, Morgan Murphy Media President-CEO Elizabeth Murphy Burns will retire from her day-to-day leadership position. She will become chair of the company’s board of directors. The company is naming current executive vice president and chief operating officer Brian Burns as the next President/CEO.
