FCC Issues Public Notice on Equal Opportunities for Appearances on Non-News Programs

January 23, 2026

FCC Washington Counsel David Oxenford reports that the FCC Media Bureau has issued a Public Notice to provide “guidance” on the application of the political broadcasting “equal opportunity” rule – in particular, the application of the “bona fide news” exemption to late night and daytime talk shows.  Although the rule applies equally to radio and television stations, the PN focuses on television programming.

Site Safety Assessments

In an effort to help provide protection to broadcasters in Michigan, the MAB and Michigan State Police Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) Desk are partnering to help broadcast stations ensure safety for their staff and facilities by offering Station Site Safety Assessments that will evaluate and make practical recommendations of security operations at broadcast stations.

Alternative Broadcast Inspections

The Alternative Broadcast Inspection Program (ABIP) is a unique partnership between the MAB and the FCC to ensure compliance with federal regulations and to avoid surprise inspections. Stations that pass the inspection receive a three-year Certification of Compliance.
