It is time for our update on the coming month’s regulatory dates and deadlines to which broadcasters should be paying attention – and the deadline that probably is most important to all commercial broadcasters is not yet known. That, of course, is the deadline for the payment of annual regulatory fees – which must be made before the federal government’s October 1 start of the new fiscal year.

WCSG’s Becky Carlson Retires

Cornerstone University’s WCSG-FM (Grand Rapids) announced last week that longtime News Director Becky Carlson has retired after 40 years.  In a Facebook post, the station writes that “Becky has served WCSG with humility and patience over the years and has consistently practiced careful discernment in selecting news stories and relaying the day’s headlines with an impartial, factual, and compassionate approach.

Even Though No Nationwide EAS Test is Scheduled, FCC Reminds Broadcasters – Both Commercial and Noncommercial – To File ETRS Form One by October 4, 2024

We thought that this would be a good time to remind broadcasters of EAS filing obligation that they may have missed as there has not been the widespread publicity that comes with the announcement of a Nationwide EAS test.  While there is apparently no plan to conduct a Nationwide Test this year, broadcasters still must file their EAS Test Reporting System (ETRS) Form One by October 4, 2024.

Site Safety Assessments

In an effort to help provide protection to broadcasters in Michigan, the MAB and Michigan State Police Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) Desk are partnering to help broadcast stations ensure safety for their staff and facilities by offering Station Site Safety Assessments that will evaluate and make practical recommendations of security operations at broadcast stations.

Alternative Broadcast Inspections

The Alternative Broadcast Inspection Program (ABIP) is a unique partnership between the MAB and the FCC to ensure compliance with federal regulations and to avoid surprise inspections. Stations that pass the inspection receive a three-year Certification of Compliance.
