Regional RTDNA Murrow Award Winners Announced

May 22, 2025

The Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) has announced the recipients of the 2025 Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards.  8 Michigan broadcasters won a total of 12 awards in Region 7, which is shared with Illinois, Indiana and Ohio.  Award recipients demonstrate the spirit of excellence that Murrow set as a standard for the profession of electronic journalism.

Michigan Public receives AAJA Journalism Excellence Awards

May 22, 2025

Michigan Public has been honored by the AAJA (Asian American Journalists Association) with multiple Journalism Excellence Awards.  Zena Issa, Michigan Public’s Criminal Justice reporter won the AAJA 2025 Student Excellence in Audio Storytelling Award for her Stateside podcast segment “What the Vote?: Gen Z and the Uncommitted Movement.”

Former WOOD Radio Anchor/Reporter John Smith Passes at 64

May 22, 2025

Your MAB is sad to pass along word that former WOOD Radio (Grand Rapids) news anchor/reporter John Christopher “Smitty” Smith passed away May 11 at age 64, just three days before his 65th birthday. Smith started his broadcasting career while a student at Michigan State University at WILS-AM (Lansing).

Site Safety Assessments

In an effort to help provide protection to broadcasters in Michigan, the MAB and Michigan State Police Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) Desk are partnering to help broadcast stations ensure safety for their staff and facilities by offering Station Site Safety Assessments that will evaluate and make practical recommendations of security operations at broadcast stations.

Alternative Broadcast Inspections

The Alternative Broadcast Inspection Program (ABIP) is a unique partnership between the MAB and the FCC to ensure compliance with federal regulations and to avoid surprise inspections. Stations that pass the inspection receive a three-year Certification of Compliance.
